Quick Presentation Skills Tip ===================================================== START LOW by Tom Antion Unless you are doing some type of surprise or big rah rah opening, consciously start out with a slightly lower than normal voice inflection. In the excitement or nervousness that many of us feel at the beginning of a presentation, it is easy to go the other way and start out with a voice inflection that is too high. The problem with this is that if you are already at a high range when you start, you have nowhere to go as you attempt to crescendo the audience to a big peak of excitement at the end of your program. ************ SPONSOR ************ "Speaking Successfully: 1001 Tips for Thriving in the Speaking Business" is a 196-page special report of the best tips from three years of SpeakerNet News, the award-winning free weekly e-newsletter for and by speakers, trainers and consultants. Advanced Presentation Skills Article ===================================================== GET EM ON STAGE Part I by Tom Antion My Wake em Up system is based on attention gaining devices. Here is one that works ever time: Virtually every presentation I do, I find some excuse to get someone on stage with me. When an audience member is on stage, the rest of the audience is glued to the action for the following reasons: 1. They want to see what is going to happen to one of their own. 2. They are priming themselves to be up there. 3. They are worrying to death that they may be asked to be up there. Reasons 1 and 2 are good and reason 3 is not so good. For 1 and 2 the mindset of the observing audience member is that, "I want to watch to see what my colleague or other audience member will do when they are on stage. No matter how exciting you are as a presenter, you can not compete with the excitement generated by someone who is on stage who is not "supposed" to be on stage. The other mindset is, "I BETTER watch what is going on in case I am asked to go up there." This mindset is good too, because it forces the audience member to actually think about the point you are trying to make. For number 3, you want to keep shy or sensitive audience members from withdrawing from your program altogether because of the fear that they may be asked to stand up in front of everyone. This chance of withdrawal is easily eliminated by the following statement: "In a moment I'm going to ask for some / a volunteer to come on stage with me. Don*t worry. No one will have to come up if they don*t want to." If you have a high percentage of shy audience members, you will almost feel the breeze as they breath a sigh of relief. In Part II we will take a look at what things you can do with them once you get them on stage. *********** SPONSOR *********** Attention Speakers, Trainers, & Professionals: Earn $5500.00 or More Per Speech and Have the Meeting Planner Call You. http://www.antion.com/speakervideo.htm ******************************** ===================================================== 3. HUMOR TECHNIQUE ===================================================== DEADPAN by Tom Antion Yesterday I attended a meeting of the National Capital Area Speakers Association. The presenter was not funny, but got laughs from the crowd. He seriously began his presentation, presented slowly, and kept a low tone of voice. I thought to myself, "this is going to be a long day." Then, without cracking a smile, a totally out of character line came out of his mouth. He was going over his material which talked about thinkers, doers etc, and said, "A thinker is a person who is thinking about something." The whole room cracked up. This is called "deadpan" expression. Deadpan expression is the technique of combining a serious demeanor with a funny line. The line typically gets a bigger laugh than the same line delivered with a lighthearted expression or smile. The contrast and surprise is what stimulates the laughter. The most recent and famous example of this is the comedian Steven Wright who NEVER breaks character to smile. He says lines like, "My dog is confused. I named him STAY. . . .Then I say come STAY." A more animated and cartoonish version of this is Rodney Dangerfield who pretends to be serious about his goofy life. He says, "I am an earth sign and my wife is a water sign . . . .Together we make mud." hahahaha If it fits your character, try a little deadpan. ********* GREAT SPEAKER REFERENCE ******* BE THE HIT OF YOUR NEXT PRESENTATION! The ideas were really flowing. I am obviously delivering the TeleSeminars on a public basis to deliver information in exchange for money. Pretty simple idea right? Here are some of the other ways that came up in the seminar to use this extremely low cost medium. => Use the concept to add value to an existing engagement by offering a free or low cost follow up seminar or series of refreshers. => Hold pre-program TeleSeminars to gain input from selected audience members and to stimulate excitement about your upcoming appearance. => Offer your regular programs through this method at nearly your same fee, but with no travel expense and no time wasted on the road. => Conduct focus groups to get excellent feedback on your proposed products and services and to keep your name in front of your clients. => Conduct no fee demonstration TeleSeminars for potential clients to give them good information and to demonstrate your expertise. => Sell subscriptions for on-going training. One gentleman told us about how he sells $495.00/month TeleTraining sessions and the clients pay one year in advance. SOME OTHER IDEAS ON HOW TO USE THIS RIDICULOUSLY CHEAP TECHNOLOGY: => Mastermind groups of your colleagues can now meet cheaper and easier than ever. => Storytelling and speech material critiques can be held by groups of your peers for almost nothing per person and the participants can be anywhere in the world. => What about throwing a family reunion? AND if you can*t stand your uncle you can always hang up and claim you got cut off hahahahaha. For a copy of the tape of this fantastic TeleSeminar and to learn how to conduct your own TeleSeminar visit http://www.antion.com/telesemtapes.htm It's tape #6 of the Kick Series. SPEAKER HUMOR ===================================================== => Blessed are those who have nothing to say and cannot be persuaded to say it . . . .James Lowell => Some people can talk for hours on a subject. I don*t even need a subject. => An expert is one who knows more and more about less and less . . .Nicholas Butler => A fool and his money are soon partying. => Never knock on Death*s door: . . . Ring the doorbell and run (he hates that). => In New York there are two kinds of pedestrians. . .the quick and the dead. => A woman phoned me the other day and said ...."Come on over, there is nobody home." I went over. . . . Nobody was home. -- Rodney Dangerfield => I was such an ugly kid..when I played in the sandbox the cat kept covering me up. -- Rodney Dangerfield => When it rains, why don*t sheep shrink? => Do radioactive cats have 18 half-lives? => What is the speed of dark? => Everyone has a photographic memory. . . . Some just don*t have film. => I just got lost in thought. It was unfamiliar territory. => I feel like I am diagonally parked, in a parallel universe. => Bumpersticker: "Honk if you love peace and quiet." => Bumpersticker: "Pardon my driving, I am reloading." => Despite the cost of living, have you noticed how it remains so popular? => Nothing is fool-proof to a sufficiently talented fool. => If a parsley farmer is sued, can they garnish his wages? => A day without sunshine is like, . . . night. USEFUL WEBSITES ===================================================== http://www.greatvoice.com Awesome site for speaker voice improvement resources. http://www.permacharge.com/ Reader Neil Sinclair recommends "Wall Write" . . . electrostatically charged sheets in roll form that can be simply placed on almost any wall surface, and stay there. No blue tack, Sellotape, pins or backs of audience shirts! (this is a reference to "Improvise your Flipchart" article Volume 1 Number 18) Neil says, "Since Wall Write is plastic, any whiteboard markers work on it and it can be erased. I have found Wall Write great to work with and easy to transport." ===================================================== 7.
