Quick Presentation Skills Tip ===================================================== BALLOONS by Tom Antion Having owned an entertainment and balloon delivery company, I feel uniquely qualified to address this topic. Here are some ways to use balloons to add excitement to your presentation. AIR FILLED (just blow them up yourself or get an easy to carry hand pump from your local party store) => Put slips of paper with the name of a door prize in the balloon. Let participants pick a balloon, pop it and see what prize they won. => Tie them to a string and hang from ceiling as decorations. => Use double stick tape and tape them to the floor as a border from the entrance door to the seating area. This is also good to take up space in a room that is too big for the number of chairs. => Pass empty balloons out to crowd. Have them blow them up and make whistling noises by letting the air escape while stretching the nozzle. Give prizes for best whistle song. => Pass out balloons and have audience members blow up and tie them. Simulate a fireworks display (noise only) by having the audience members stomp on the balloons. => Buy inexpensive balloon drop bags and pull ripcord, then encourage fireworks tip above. => Make balloon animals and sculptures. Next issue we'll talk about helium balloons, and safety and environmental tips when dealing with balloons. ************ SPONSOR ************ AMERICAN TRAINING & SEMINAR ASSOCIATION Certified Professional Trainer courses enrolling now. Advanced Presentation Skills Article ===================================================== REPETITION by Don Davies You've heard that in everyday conversation it's impolite to repeat yourself. In a speech repetition can not only be polite, it can be a very powerful way to build a thought or idea. Most people who are old enough can still picture Martin Luther King Jr. saying: "I have a dream..." In that speech he repeated that phrase over and over again and with each repetition the audience joined him louder and louder . . . because they too had a dream and no matter how many times he said it, they never tired of hearing about his dream. This same technique can be used to make any speech more powerful and memorable. Picture a business executive introducing his/her new product to the sales force or to customers. ----- "They told us to 'back off' when we wanted to make it more durable, because they said it would make it more expensive. They told us to 'back off' when we wanted to reduce margins to make the price more competitive. The told us to 'back off' when we insisted on increasing the marketing budget. But now that we're number one in the market place, no one is saying 'back off' anymore. They're saying, 'don't back off. Go get 'em.'" ----- By repeating the phrase 'back off,' this speaker is building the case for innovation and making the success that has been achieved seem that much more sweet because it came in spite of the pressure to stop. At the end of the sequence, the audience will probably be mouthing the words, 'back off' with the speaker. This kind of fusion between speaker and audience means that your leadership is secure and you will be followed. HUMOR TECHNIQUE ===================================================== ROAST AND INSULT HUMOR by Tom Antion Being roasted is an honor, but you must be careful to honor people while you are roasting them. Joke about things that are obviously untrue, then exaggerate them to make them more obvious. Or, you can outrageously exaggerate things that are true. When choosing the butt of a roast joke or story, pick big targets. Never make fun of a small target (janitor, secretary, etc.). Make fun of the boss. He or she is still the boss after all the teasing and will look like a great sport for going along with it. Members of "in groups" can joke about their peers and insult each other all they want. Bob Hope used to make fun of Ronald Reagan. Everyone knew they were buddies. If you widely spread an insult or collection of insults, the group can laugh together. No one is individually embarrassed. The same remarks aimed at an individual removed from the cohesive influence of the group might cause someone to get upset. Always clear your comments IN ADVANCE! Unless you are participating in a full-blown roast program, always make fun of yourself first. If you kid yourself first, the audience will be more receptive when you kid them. Here are some roast examples: To an AT & T executive: "If a Martian called Ed's office to contact earth, he'd try to sell them on the benefits of our new 800 service." Keep remarks focused on unimportant things that can't be damaging! "Folks we are here tonight to Roast Joe. I'm particularly happy to be here because I can now say in public all the things I've been saying behind his back." "He/she is a man/woman of the world . . . and you know what bad shape the world is in." Insult about areas of recognized strength and superiority! To a great family man and/or community leader: "Joe's (neighbors/business associates/preacher, etc.,) all say what a wonderful couple he and his wife make . . . if it wasn't for Joe." To a well-known philanthropist: "He is a man of rare gifts . . . he hasn't given any in years." At a program with a long head table with lots of speakers, an emcee might say: "The emcee's job is not to be wise or witty. In fact, it is his job to appear dull so that the speakers on the program will shine in comparison. Tonight it looks like I'm going to have to rise to new heights of boredom." To the audience the emcee or speaker might say: "I'm glad to be here tonight to look into your faces. . . . And God knows there are some faces here that need looking into." They then try to attract as many people as possible who are interested in that topic. The more people that visit the site, the more the advertising on the site is worth. You can tap into this large volume of website visitors for free. Let's say a site is totally about automobiles. They have all the new models listed along with articles on leasing, finance, insurance, how to buy a used car etc. Guess where they get all these articles. Of course, from subject matter experts like you. You generally don't get paid for the articles (it's possible you could), but you get paid by your bio line and link back to your website. WHY IS THIS GOOD This is good in several ways. First, a link from a very high traffic site is worth more to you than a link from a low traffic site. The link alone helps your search engine rankings because of "link popularity." Second, the article you write has high credibility for appearing on a large respected site. This means that people that click over to your site are already predisposed to like what you have to say and believe you are credible before they ever pick up the phone to call. You only need to land a few of these deals to add a tremendous number of website visitors to your site . . . all of whom could spend money with you in one way or the other. HOW TO DO IT To get your content listed, search the Internet for sites that are related to your topic area. They don't have to be "exactly" related. For instance, customer service experts would be welcome on any business related site either small or large. Email, write, call, fax or do anything it takes to get through to the powers that be at the website of interest. Persistence pays off in this game. Offer your credentials and sample articles and you just might be their next featured columnist . . . and that means millions of potentials leads for your business.
