QUICK PRESENTATION SKILLS TIP ===================================================== THINK GLOBAL by Tom Antion The world is getting smaller. Now, it is no big deal to put us on a plane and expect us to address an international audience twelve hours later. Or we might face a U. S. audience made primarily of people from Japan, or India. A handy and inexpensive source of international background information is the Culturgram published by the David M. Kennedy Center for International Studies, which is part of Brigham Young University, in Provo, Utah. Each Culturgram is a four page newsletter, updated every August, that gives you an easy to understand overview of the country of your choice. It includes customs and common courtesies, along with information about the people and their lifestyle. References are also included for additional resources. Currently 168 Culturgrams are available. Prices range from $6.00 for a single copy to 50 cents for bulk purchases. Call (800) 528-6279 for details. (Ref. ADVANCED PRESENTATION SKILLS ARTICLE ===================================================== PICK YOUR AUDIENCE By Tom Antion (Did he say "pick" my audiences?). Yes, I did say pick your audiences. Some of you may not have this luxury because you must present as part of your job, but those of you that do, will move up faster in the speaking world. When you are a beginning speaker it is important for you to experience different types of audiences just FOR the experience. As you climb the speaking ladder where the audiences are bigger, or more important to your career, and the stakes are higher, you must learn to just say no. Most top speakers dont accept every request to speak even if they are available, and the money is right. They pick their engagements to put themselves in front of audiences whose profiles indicate the greatest chance of success. If you are a highly technical presenter, you would not want to be speaking to a widget sales group at their annual retreat. Conversely, as a really fun retreat facilitator, you would not want to be speaking to a group of radar technicians who are only interested in performance data of the latest missile protection system. Avoid accepting engagements where the audiences needs are clearly out of sync with your abilities, likes and dislikes. Dont get me wrong. I want you to keep pushing your limits, but if your audience needs more than you can give -- thats right -- you bombed. Although it will be a lesson learned, do yourself and everyone else a favor. Learn to just say no. (Ref. Wake em Up Business Presentations Pgs. 92-95) ************ SPONSOR ************ The CYSTIC FIBROSIS FOUNDATION Tom will be doing a full day benefit seminar Feb. 6 in Lanham, Maryland. HUMOR TECHNIQUE ===================================================== LEARN THE FUNNY STUFF EASILY USING BITS (part 2 of 10) (AKA Chunks or Series) by Tom Antion A bit is a section of humorous material that is so related that it makes it easy for you to memorize. Each joke flows naturally from one to the next so you can deliver the funny material without notes (if you know your material). And guess what? This technique works for any kind of material so you get a two for one happy hour discount when you use it. Until I learned about bits, I never thought I could be a professional presenter because Im not great at memorizing long talks. I discovered that no one memorizes long talks. They have a mental or written outline consisting of key words that trigger the individual bit in their minds. Pros use this concept to be able to deliver long presentations without the use of notes. Becoming less dependent on notes has several advantages. When you stand before a group and deliver information without using notes, your credibility automatically rises. The audience thinks, "Wow! This person really knows the material." Since you wont be tied to a lectern or forced to hold notes, you can get physically closer to the audience, or actually enter the audience. The closer you are to them, the better you will connect and the more they will laugh. When you leave the script at home you can talk naturally to the audience rather than read to them. You would look pretty stupid up there reading your humorous material. You might do that for effect sometime, but most of the time you need to just deliver it with full eye contact. You will also be more confident using this technique because you no longer have to worry about your notes getting lost. Using bits has another big advantage. We are busy people. Its tough to find a spare hour or day to practice a full presentation. Bits can be practiced when you have a few minutes here and there. You will be more likely to practice your material (and we all need practice) if you can practice a three or five-minute chunk rather than the whole presentation. (Ref. Wake em Up Business Presentations Pgs. 65-67) Next issue learn how to get the audience "ready" to laugh. ******** GREAT SPEAKER LEARNING TOOL ******** BE THE HIT OF YOUR NEXT PRESENTATION. Why not give your seatmates some food for their minds? I carry three of my books along for each leg of my journey. Whoever sits next to me, or anywhere near me that looks like a business person gets a copy. Before long Im doing a book signing in the aisle and people are asking me for my card. One time on Southwest I got hired for an Arizona Association meeting before we landed. Another time, again on Southwest (believe it or not) I sat next to Wynona Judd and she asked me for information on my speaker coaching services. On a first class upgrade on United I sat next to a guy who is President and CEO of a 150 million dollar company. By the time we landed I was invited to his home and he offered to personally introduce me to the VP of all seven of his divisions. (Update: We just had dinner together in Los Angeles last week and we are supposed to get together again in April) Dont have a book? Make a cassette tape to give out and follow up later. Its your choice. Complain about the food, or feed your information to your fellow passengers. NOTE: I just ran across the most fabulous marketing site I have ever seen. Im using a tremendous amount of what I learned at this site. Check it out http://www.marketingtips.com/t.cgi/12273/ Want to really take advantage of your E-mail marketing . . . SPEAKER HUMOR ===================================================== => Did you ever notice that intelligence tests are biased toward the literate? => I called up a temp agency looking for work and they asked if I had any phone skills. I said, "I called you didnt I?" => Some people always give 100% at work: 12% Monday 23% Tuesday 40% Wednesday 20% Thursday 5% Friday => My receptionist hated her job. She kept answering the phone, "Hello. Can you help me?" => Its hard to make a comeback when you havent been anywhere. => Hard work will pay off later. Laziness pays off now! => The latest survey shows that three out of four people make up 75% of the population. => If at first you dont succeed. No one will be surprised. => People used to just look for a free lunch. Now they want it delivered too. => If people really profitted from their mistakes, we would all be rich by now. => Most people dont mind going to work. Its the working itself they dont like. => You cant judge a book by its cover, but you can tell a lot about a corporation by its Chapter 11.
