Quick Presentation Skills Tip ===================================================== BRIBES by Tom Antion . . . or, as I like to call them, "Tips in advance" are a part of my speaking life. Does that mean I am an unethical person. ABSOLUTELY NOT! It means I am a realist. It means that when I am 30 minutes from the beginning of a presentation and I have been trying to get a projection screen for two hours, it might be time to grease a few palms. I just consider it an investment in my image. I am the one who is going to look bad if I am not prepared to begin on time. If it costs me five or ten or even twenty bucks to get some action, so what? I don't believe in penny pinching when you get in a pinch. Am I happy about this? No, I am not happy, but I am always willing to invest in excellence. Also, I would rather lose a few bucks than get all worked up and upset before a presentation. In addition, any problems I am having are probably not the fault of the maintenance or set up person who gets the money. It makes me feel good to give them a little boost in their pay for that day. So, have a few small bills handy before every presentation, just in case you need to get something done quick. One more thing . . .This also works when you have too much baggage at the curb side check in. An extra bag costs 50 bucks at the airline ticket counter, so I give the skycap 20 and save myself 30. It doesn't work every time, but most of the time it does. ************ SPONSOR ************ LAST CHANCE FOR LOW PRICE ELECTRONIC MARKETING BUTT CAMPS Washington, D.C. Advanced Presentation Skills Article ===================================================== FREQUENCY CHECK by Tom Antion It is pretty common to have multiple wireless microphones going during the same presentation. The AV crew that sets everything up usually makes sure that they are all on different frequencies so that no cross over occurs. You should still double check it anyway. BUT WHAT ABOUT MICE? When speaking in Thailand last week I ran into a situation that has never happened to me or the other seasoned presenter before. We each had a Logitech Trackman RF Mouse. RF stands for "Radio Frequency" which means that the wireless mouse doesn't have to be in line of sight with the receiver like an infra red mouse would. It also means that I couldn't keep my mouse from moving the cursor on his computer (the other guy was on right after me with no break). We tried every trick we could think of with no luck We finally decided to shut my whole system down quickly after I was finished and boot his up as fast as we could while he made some opening comments to the crowd. With more and more wireless technology being used during presentations you must thoroughly check out all systems and consider presenters who are on both before and after you. This is yet another reason to be there early and find out what is going on during other programs. Had we not noticed this ahead of time he would have had a really shaky beginning to his program . . . if the program were switched . . . it could have been me! *********** SPONSOR *********** PUBLISHER SEEKS SPEAKERS for new audio album, "THE MASTERMINDS OF MOTIVATION" with Dottie Walters. HUMOR TECHNIQUE ===================================================== JUXTAPOSITION by Tom Antion Juxtaposition is the placing, side by side, of two ideas or items usually for the purpose of comparison or contrast. I staged an event at Washington National Airport where I had a huge 450-pound man and a very small man (three feet eleven inches) dressed as chauffeurs. They were waiting at the gate for a man from Japan arriving for his first visit to the United States. To take the comical juxtaposition one step further, the small man was holding a gigantic sign with the Japanese man's name on it and the extra large man was holding a similar sign, except it was about the size of a business card. Believe me, we had the attention of everyone in the gate area. What a visual! Now let's look at two specialized types of juxtaposition: Oxymorons Warren S. Blumenfeld, Ph.D., in his book Pretty Ugly states, "I {passively tried} to warn you oxymorons had {almost absolutely} no socially redeeming quality except that they make people {smile out loud} and are addictive." His first book on the subject was called "Jumbo Shrimp." According to Dr. Blumenfeld, "An oxymoron is two concepts {usually two words} that do not go together, but are used together. It is a bringing together of contradictory expressions." Terms like "old news," "extensive briefing," "direct circumvention" and "random order" are oxymorons. Also concepts like "an advanced state of decline" and "expecting a surprise" are oxymorons. Pleonasms A pleonasm is the bringing together of two concepts or words that are redundant. A pleonasm is the bringing together of two concepts or words that are redundant. How many times do I have to tell you? Combinations like "frozen ice," "sharp point," "killed dead," "sandy beach," "young child," "positive praise," and "angry rage" are pleonasms. Here are some ways you can use comical juxtaposition in business world presentations: => Use a large copy of your company logo or company name on a slide or overhead, or in a drawing on your flipchart. Next to it, place extremely small logos or company names of your competitors. Use this as a greeting slide to a meeting or let it pop up as a slide or overhead at a strategic point in your presentation. You could draw an outline of a large duck around your company logo and little duckling outlines around the competition. You could say: "Our company was born to lead and the others were meant to follow." => Use an oxymoron in conjunction with a simile to drive home the point that something is a little out of kilter. You could say, "Acme Co. claims that its market share is increasing, yet their sales are down while everyone elses' are up. It's just like a Jumbo Shrimp. It just doesn't make sense." Invite a tall person and a short person on stage when you call for audience participation. If you are considerably shorter than the tall person say, "I don't want you to talk down to me." If you are considerably taller than the short person say, "I don't want you to feel like I'm talking down to you." (be careful that the person you get on stage is not overly sensitive about their height) ********* GREAT SPEAKER REFERENCE ******* BE THE HIT OF YOUR NEXT PRESENTATION! "Wake em Up! Think in terms of selling your knowledge and you will have more money and more speaking engagements than you ever had before. How does this work? Well you're supposed to be an expert on something aren't you? Or, maybe you've got some inspirational story to tell that teaches a lesson to those that hear it. Put that expertise or story out in every format you can. Here's my own example: I've got expertise in the area of teaching advanced speaking skills. I produced a book on it in 1997. Three years later the book is out in five different formats. It is 1.) a printed book, 2.) a CD, 3.) an E Book, 4.) an audiotape album, and 5.) a videotape system. I've also got Internet marketing expertise which is out in 1.) CD ROM, 2.) audiotape, 3.) sold via TeleSeminar and soon a 300+ page book will be downloadable from my website. In this relatively short period of time my fee has doubled and I have more speaking opportunities than I ever had at the lesser fee . . . .AND NOT ONE COLD CALL IN THE LAST FIVE YEARS! Also, the income generated from these materials allows me to hold out for the better engagements so I don't have to beat myself to death doing community center basement gigs. The reason selling your knowledge is a logical and very fruitful way to go is that unless you are extremely established, it is a big jump to take someone from never having heard of you to a high fee speaking engagement in one quick swoop. However, when someone heard you on tape or read your book etc., your credibility is already established before they ever contact you. It changes the entire nature of the balance of power between the potential buyer and you. You hold the cards when they call. Putting your knowledge in their hands in the form of an educational product is what makes them call. Make it a point to learn how to create informational products inexpensively. DO NOT GET SUCKED INTO SPENDING $37,000.00 TO CREATE ONE PRODUCT UNLESS YOU HAVE MONEY TO BURN! (I don't think I spent that much cash creating my entire product line.) Contact me or any other prolific product producer for help getting started. You will be glad you did! Maybe you are getting sick of hearing about Butt Camp but it teaches product development along with advanced Electronic Marketing techniques that are getting results for speakers like Rob Dale who created a CD and booked $108,000.00 worth of business the first week, or Rhoberta Shaler who attended Butt Camp twice (the second time was free) and just told me this week that the changes she made to her website have resulted in many requests to speak internationally, or Mike Stahl who added 50 pages to his website all by himself at no cost and he now has 3 ebooks and a number one search engine ranking. You have two chances left to attend at the low fee.
