Quick Presentation Skills Tip ===================================================== LADIES ON TV by Great Speaking reader Karen Puckett Hi Tom: I enjoyed your recent newsletter, and had a comment about a man keeping his tie straight during a speaking engagement http:www.antion.com/ezinebackissues.htm v2n8. A similar topic applies to women. At one of my former places of employment, part of the new employee orientation was sitting through several hours of a customer service presentation on video tape. In addition to being a painfully unanimated speaker, the presenter wore a suit with the biggest, loudest scarf around her neck and over her shoulder. All of us poor souls in the room watching were left with no recollection of the content of the presentation, but a indelible image of the infamous scarf! As you know, not only should the length of a speech be appropriate for the audience, but the speaker should make sure that their appearance is not distracting. Thanks for all the great tips. Karen Puckett Tom's reply: Thanks Karen for your input. Also, keep in mind that the beautiful scarf you referred to might be perfect if you were on a big stage in front of a large audience. Always keep your delivery medium in mind. ************ SPONSOR ************ SpeakerNet News Teleseminars! Advanced Presentation Skills Article ===================================================== ADD MAGIC TO YOUR PRESENTATIONS by Tom Antion There is just something about a magic trick that grabs people. The nice thing about it is that as a presenter who uses magic to make a point, you are not held to the high standards you would be held to if you were a professional magician. I do some simple magic that would probably make a real magician throw up, yet I get comments from the audience that they loved my "illusions." Think about some of the points you make during your speech that might need a little extra pizazz to make them memorable. Visit a magic shop and tell the proprietor what you want to accomplish and that your skill level is zero. Most good magic shops have literally thousands of tricks to pick from for all skill levels and all audience sizes. Magic tricks are also a fun way to add some lightheartedness and WOW factor to your presentations. The points you make and the comedy aspect of the magic usually come from the "patter" (what the magician says while doing the trick). You can even buy books of comic patter. Many magic tricks are now on video which makes them infinitely easier to learn than trying to read them from a book. An excellent tape for rope tricks is "Daryl's Rope Tricks # 7." Your local magic shop probably has it and if they don't they can probably order it. I really like to learn magic from videos because you can see the trick in action. Reading them from a book is OK, and very useful, but you just can't beat video training. Two good magic videos for speakers by master magician Tom Ogden are "Teaching and Training with Magic" and "The Magic of Creativity." I got these two videos from Royal Publishing & Walters Speakers Services (626) 335-8069 *********** SPONSOR *********** EXPLOSIVE MOTIVATIONAL SPEAKERS WANTED--Publisher wants YOU for upcoming "MasterMinds of Motivation(tm)" audio program. HUMOR TECHNIQUE ===================================================== BLOOPERS Bloopers are clumsy mistakes that are usually made in public. The television show "TV's Bloopers and Practical Jokes" and many blooper books are indicators of the interest we have in other people's goofs. Here are two from "All Time Great Bloopers" by Blooper Snooper Kermit Schafer and one from "More Press Boners" by Earle Tempel, and how you might use them in a presentation. => A while back I heard about a DJ on WIOD in Miami, Florida who said, "This is Alan Courtney speaking. Don't forget, tonight at nine, our special guest . . . (pause) . . .will be . . . I forgot." Well, I haven't forgotten why we are here today . . . or (For an introducer) I couldn't possibly forget who is here with us today. => Mayor Daley of Chicago was being interviewed on TV following the riots during the Democratic convention. The mayor stated, "The police in Chicago are not here to create disorder, they are here to preserve it." I hope I don't create or preserve any disorder in my presentation today. => From The San Leandro, CA News: I saw a notice in the newspaper the other day. It said, "Industrial Boulevard is empty because it is a road to nowhere. Work is underway to extend it." If we keep developing the obsolete widget. We will be on the road to nowhere too. I made the mistake of adding and adding and adding things to my homepage to the point where there was nearly 24 places to click. That has been reduced to seven with only two main categories and my visitors are thanking me in the form of spending more money. I believe in continuous improvement so I got some outside help to critique my website which was doing quite well at the time. The objective third party noticed that there were just too many choices for a visitor landing on my home page and that many of the buttons down the left hand side could be combined. My consultant encouraged me to separate my different types of visitors right at the homepage and take them down different paths. The two main visitors I get are people needing a speaker and people that want to be a speaker. Those are now the main buttons on my site and each take the specific type of visitor on their own trip through my site. I have gotten much feedback that the site is now much easier to navigate. This is primarily because people looking for a speaker now don't have to even be bothered with speaker services and all the other things on the site for speakers. AND the speakers visiting my site don't have to be bothered with program descriptions, Frequently Asked Questions and things that only apply to meeting planners. Determine who the key visitors are to your site and redesign the structure to separate them from the very beginning and you will find your visitors will stay longer and buy more because they don't have to sift through things that are not of interest to them.
