Quick Presentation Skills Tip ===================================================== Re: USING BALLOONS IN PRESENTATIONS articles in the last two issues WARNING http://www.antion.com/ezinebackissues2001.htm (v3n11, v3n12) Two alert readers who work in the healthcare field, Carol O'Connor, MSW, and Dyerenda Johnson both noted they are noticing increased incidence of latex allergies (because of increased exposure to latex gloves and items such as IV tubing, bags, etc.). These allergies can be life threatening and thus, many hospitals have banned the usage of latex balloons. You probably won't run into the above problem in presentations that aren't in the health care arena, but it is certainly good to be aware. One way around this is to use Mylar (foil) balloons. They are a little more expensive, but will completely eliminate the above problem. In the old days Mylar balloons required heat sealing. In our entertainment company we simply used curling irons to seal the balloons. Many modern day Mylar balloons have self sealing reusable valves so you could actually use them over and over again if you were simply using them for decoration at your events. ************ SPONSOR ************ "Millionaire-Maker" Dan Kennedy Reveals All His Secrets For Growing Your Income, Profits and Wealth. Advanced Presentation Skills Article ===================================================== MENTAL INVOLVEMENT Part I by Tom Antion One of the best ways to get your message to sink in is to get the audience thinking. This may sound elementary, but when you are up there spewing words at the audience, they may not have time to think. That is one reason pauses are so effective. They give the audience a chance to catch up and apply their own thoughts and value systems to what you are saying. Asking questions of the audience is a great way to force them into the think mode. "Has anyone ever been to Cleveland?" A simple question like this zooms an individual audience member's mind to Cleveland if that person has been to Cleveland. If that person has not been to Cleveland, he or she will be tuned in mentally to see what you have to say about Cleveland. "Have you ever had your keys in your hand one minute and the next minute they were gone?" This question is the Has-this-ever- happened-to-you? variety. To corral the most audience members with a question like this, all you have to do is use a question that you know (from your pre-program research) will relate to most of the audience. Johnny Carson before he retired, Jay Leno, and David Letterman all use questions about current news to grab their audiences mentally. They ask "Did you read today?" or "Did you hear today about . . .? Johnny, Jay, and Dave know that if the audience has heard about the current event they will feel a common bond, and if they haven't heard about it, they will listen more carefully. To make sure these talented and funny talk show hosts reach the largest portion of their respective audiences, they almost always explain or recap the news item before they make the joke. This gives those audience members that haven't heard about the current event a chance to get the humor. Next issue we'll see how "Hey Stupid" questions can be turned into a great advantage for you. HUMOR TECHNIQUE ===================================================== FUNNY Q AND A SESSIONS by Tom Antion If you want to take more control of the humor used in a Q & A session, you can. Here are two solid methods that I use all the time. The first is to plant stooges in the audience. The second is a variation on an old standby Q & A method. When I say that you should plant stooges in the audience, I usually mean that you should select one or more of the audience members to help you with the gag. You contact these people either by phone when you are doing your pre-program research or during the time you are schmoozing with audience members before the program. You simply ask them for some help during the talk. If they agree, tell them to raise their hand during the Q and A portion of the talk. They will be asking fake question you have given them. The question itself may be funny or your preplanned answer could be the zinger. Either way should get a laugh. Here's the hard part. You must supply the question. The more customized it is to the group, the better it will be. It might be funny if you got the president of the company to ask a really dumb question like, "How much did we pay you to be here?" It might be funny if you got one of the top salespeople to ask when they get to take the company jet to their next sales call. Who knows what might be funny to your group? I sure don't. I will give you a little hint though. The answer to what might be funny to the group you are addressing will most likely come to you while you are doing your research on the group. That is another reason pre-program work is so important. Sometimes all the humor is handed to you. All you have to do is plug it in. If you want even more exacting control over the humor used in the Q and A session, you can use a very common Q and A technique. Solicit questions from the group to be submitted on 3" x 5" cards. All you have to do then is slip in a few fake ones. That way you get to be in control of reading both the question and the answer. This would be the way to go if you had worries about your stooges performing well, or if you didn't recruit any stooges. TRICK: Purposely omit material that you know will evoke certain questions. When the questions come, give a preplanned funny answer that appears spontaneous. Then give the real answer. They'll think you are a genius. One guy was there that I've been wanting to meet for a long time. His name is Jonathan Mizel. He is well respected internationally as a brilliant force and pioneer in strategic permission based marketing for businesses both large and small. I got a chance to speak to him several times in the hallway and just one idea I got from him made me about $3,000.00 in two days. I couldn't believe it. HERE'S THE IDEA: Jonathan has a really, inexpensive course on using pop-up boxes judiciously on your we site to increase product sales and sign ups for your Ezine WITHOUT annoying your website visitors (techies don't like pop ups, but truly interested prospects don't mind). You can use them for lots of other things too, and in the course he gets all his marketing friends to spill the beans on how they use their pop up boxes to generate more leads and make more sales. I bought the course and put two pop up boxes on different websites the first night -- all by myself! (You can also have your webmaster do it for you. It takes just a few minutes if you know what you are doing.) $3000.00 IN TWO DAYS Many of you know that I just came out with a really good E-book called "Click: The Ultimate Guide to Electronic Marketing for Speakers" Jonathan's course taught me I could have a pop up box open up ONLY if a person didn't order. This is called an "exit" pop up, and his course includes the exact code to make it work! My pop up box offered a free sample of the E-book and the complete Table of Contents. I ended up selling 31 copies of the $97.00 book in two days which came to $3,007! ENTRY BOXES The other idea I got from the course was put to use immediately on http://www.public-speaking.org This site is specifically used to get Ezine subscribers. It gets tons of traffic and already does a good job of getting sign ups. But as soon as I put an entry pop up box promoting my Ezine on the site, daily subscriptions jumped at least 30 percent! I feel this is a dirt cheap way to get the most out of your existing traffic. The USA today does too, because they just ran an article about pop up windows just a few days ago. This marketing method can double your Ezine subscriber rate, explode your sales, and squeeze up to 300% more cash out of each Web site visitor.
